GOP too extreme for independents

As an independent who voted for Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. in his first run for governor but not in his second, I don't even look at the Republicans on the ballot if they don't exhibit some kind of moderation ("Time for Maryland Republicans to open up," July 22). They have gotten so far to right that they feel like extremists.

They are on the far end of all the major issues including immigration, abortion, regulation and taxation. They say "no" to any idea that is put forth with no thought of compromise. I attempt to listen to Republicans but if "Obama" is the second word out of their mouth, I stop because I know that some form of "no" is coming.

Republicans are going to need more than opening their primaries to independents to get my vote.
