Circulator buses for food deserts

Thanks for your editorial on Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's plan to eliminate "food deserts" in Baltimore and assure reasonable access to grocery stores for city residents ("Baltimore's food deserts," June 15).

Offering developers tax breaks to encourage the opening of new grocery stores in food deserts is a good idea. However, it will undoubtedly take some time for these new stores to get established.

In the meantime, perhaps the city could provide circulator buses similar to the ones operating downtown to help transport residents from their neighborhoods to grocery stores that otherwise would be out of reach.

This would be the reverse of the "green food" trucks that bring fresh groceries into the city's food deserts.
