Maryland has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, yet Gov.Martin O'Malleyis proposing state intervention to create private temporary jobs by tilting at windmills ("New O'Malley wind farm proposal still a long shot," Jan. 24).
Ocean windmills are, at best, an unprofitable technology. Ratepayers will subsidize this folly with a $24 annual tax added to home energy bills. Like the flush tax, this will increase. When government meddles in the private sector, results are usually abysmal. Why the rush? Wait for alternative energy to become cost-effective and thereby self-financing.
