In addition to Max Obuszewski's prescient observation of what has become President Barack Obama's war, this perpetual war with no borders has gotten the support of much of the media and Congress ("Has President Obama undergone a chance of heart?" Oct. 3). What began as a promise by President Obama not to engage in conflict with U.S. advisers has evolved to a debate over "boots on the ground," or, in other words, active combat.
How many will be maimed and killed during this mission? All of this has resulted, and continues to result, in deep cuts in social spending — notably education and programs for the less fortunate. One of the most outrageous of these has been food stamps, a major source of nutrition for the poor.
Meanwhile, Mr. Obama has spoken frequently of public infrastructure and the need for extensive building and rebuilding in this country. That would require substantial government funding and possibly higher taxes.
The military should shift funds to civilian, public projects instead. That would be worth the effort.
