In his column ("Intelligence paid off, but needless wars drag on" May 4) columnist Tom Schaller seized on reports of Osama bin Laden's death to continue his relentless attacks on Republicans in general, and George W. Bush in particular.
This comes as no surprise to me. Mr. Schaller is a member of the advisory board of the "The Democratic Strategist ." The published editorial policy of this online publication states: "The Democratic Strategist will be clearly focused on developing political strategies for promoting Democratic candidates and issues. It will be proudly and avowedly partisan, aimed at achieving an enduring Democratic majority."
As have many of his columns, Mr. Schaller's May 4 column did just that.
He labeled potential Republican presidential candidates "a mixed bag of has-beens ... wannabees ... and conspiracy nuts." But he wrote glowingly of President Obama as an incumbent "who killed Global Public Enemy No. 1"
He also asserted that President Obama's announcement of bin Laden's death was "understated." Which he then contrasted with President George W. Bush 's wearing "a flight jumpsuit" when he was transported in a Navy jet to an aircraft carrier returning from a 10-month deployment. He neglected (of course) to mention that President Bush had served as a pilot in the Houston Air National Guard and was wearing appropriate garb for the flight.
