Paid for doing nothing?

I went to the Motor Vehicles Administration recently to obtain an ID card for my elderly father, and the line was out the door. Yet near the counter was a sign, left over from last week, stating that the MVA would be closed on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday during the Labor Day weekend.

As a taxpayer, I would like to know why we are paying pay state employees for two days off when the holiday is just one day. Does no one in Maryland state politics pay attention to what happened to Detroit?

Public sector employees are quick to complain about furloughs, but they constantly have their hands out for excessive benefits. When is the state going to hire a professional negotiator to negotiate union contracts so taxpayers can stop providing benefits that private-sector employees will never get?
