Tiny threats to Md.'s waterways

I was pleased to see that Del. Dan Morhaim had introduced a bill to eliminate "microbeads" from all products sold in Maryland ("Bill aims to end use of plastic "microbeads" in personal care products," Feb. 9).

Microbeads have become so omnipresent in our waterways that they are a danger not only to aquatic life but to human health as well.

No one knows what damage they may cause as we accumulate them in our bodies. They are clearly not a necessity in any product, as is shown by companies voluntarily eliminating them.

New York has already passed a bill banning the beads, and California came within one vote of doing the same last year. It would be great to have Maryland help bring about the day when microbeads have been banned in so many states that manufacturers stop making them.

Thanks to Dr. Morhaim, and I hope that the legislature passes his bill this year.
