The triumph of mentors

I was so pleased to see The Sun's front page coverage of a very successful mentoring program in Baltimore ("Thread, a Baltimore nonprofit, weaves students' lives together," April 19). I was first made aware of this program in a commentary written by Gregg Bernstein, the former Baltimore City state's attorney ("Two programs show any student can succeed with sustained mentoring," March 15). I even wrote a letter to Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller suggesting the General Assembly consider funding programs like this rather than just pouring money into public education with very little improvement shown in the public schools. I think it's been shown that it takes more than just money. We've been doing this for so many years with very little return for the money spent.
