Giving the proceeds for traffic light and speed camera violators to charities is a good idea.
Having these devices is a great challenge to speeders and DUI drivers who flout laws designed to protect all of us. I do not believe that H.L. Mencken would have the cynical attitude that was expressed in a recent letter to the editor ("Mencken would have denounced speed cameras," Dec. 31).
However devious one may feel the motivations for these devices were, I personally concur that their benefits overshadow all else.
I am old fashioned, I guess. I believe yellow lights tell me to prepare to stop (not to rush ahead). I fully stop before turning on a red light, and I still stop at stop signs.
