Congratulations to City Schools CEO-designate Sonja Santelises on DeRay Mckesson's appointment to the all-important role of assuring that we have the best possible people in place in our system as she starts her promising time leading us and our children forward ("Civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson to join new city schools cabinet," June 28).

We at the Baltimore Community Foundation have worked with Mr. Mckesson since he was a high school volunteer, and we have taken pride in his success as president of his class and of the student government at Bowdoin College, at Teach for America and The Harlem Children's Zone in New York and in important roles in the Baltimore and Minneapolis school systems.

He has also successfully challenged all of us in positions of power to listen to often-unheard voices in our communities, offering us the opportunity to establish trust and develop inclusive and entrepreneurial solutions to our greatest challenges.

We are thrilled to have this brilliant and dedicated young man in an important role in Baltimore.

Tom Wilcox, Baltimore
