McKeldin remade as traffic hurdle?

(Handout photo)

I see the city boosters are drooling over the concept of a grassy, landscaped McKeldin Plaza ("New plan would transform McKeldin Plaza," May 13) that would seamlessly lead from the corner of Pratt and Light streets to Harborplace.

Goodness, gracious, we could accept any improvement of that area — but not one that would so adversely impact the city's pivotal commuting intersection. Radio traffic reporters would forever seek new drama and make a great former statesman a name that would live in infamy by describing the morning and evening "McKeldin Plaza traffic jams" as commuters would be shut off from gliding past the plaza onto northbound Calvert Street and reduced lanes would constrict southbound commuters heading toward Conway Street and I-395.

This plan is the case of trying to fit 10 pounds of improvements into a five-pound bag.
