Reining in the mayor's power

I fully agree with Baltimore City Councilman James Kraft that we need a partnership between the council and the mayor to move our city forward ("City Council revives bills aimed at weakening mayor's power," Jan. 16).

The bill that would require a two-thirds rather than three-fourths majority to override a mayoral veto is eminently reasonable. Considering that a presidential veto can be overridden by a two-thirds majority vote in Congress, the same rule applied in Baltimore would ensure that the ideas and experience of council members are given the weight they deserve.

Additionally, given the impressive pool of political talent in our city, the proposed term limits bill seems equally logical. While I do not advocate term limits in national politics, I fully support term limits for city elected officials; we need the measured turnover that would guarantee the flow of fresh talent and ideas that have benefited Baltimore in the past.

Councilman Kraft is spot on with his support for these bills, and I hope that both will be ratified in the 2016 election.
