Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake appears to believe that criminal assaults by police are a predominant manifestation of crime in Baltimore ("Mayor wants new felony charge to address police assaults," Feb. 2).
She surely is aware that the national news regarding the ultimate criminal assaults — murder and manslaughter — has for months been dominated by a mere three cases in which Al Sharpton and other hustlers have used misrepresentations, disorderly demonstrations and violence to denounce two white police officers and a Hispanic neighborhood watchman for the deaths of three black men.
She ought to be aware that all three cases went through extensive prosecutorial investigations involving medical and other experts, that two were subject to lengthy, racially-integrated grand jury proceedings that resulted in no criminal charges against them and that the neighborhood watchman was the defendant in a full trial before a racially-integrated jury in which he was found not guilty of all criminal charges.
She also ought to be aware that nationally, as in Baltimore, the number of blacks killed by white police officers is minuscule compared to the number of blacks killed by other blacks. In 2014, over 90 percent of the 210 Baltimore murders involved black victims and black perpetrators.
The liberals in the government, academia, the think tanks and the media conveniently ignore that the local site of this holocaust is concentrated in Baltimore's black inner city neighborhoods and that law abiding black flight from the inner city has been as prevalent as white flight.
Since the early 1980s, the black population of Baltimore County has grown from approximately 12 percent to about 30 percent. Yet in 2014 there were 21 homicides in the more populated Baltimore County, which amounts to only 10 percent of the number committed in the city.
Liberals most studiously ignore that the majority of children in these inner city neighborhoods with their high crime, poverty, education failure, unemployment and homelessness are the offspring of single mothers. The policies and programs of mostly white liberals such as the Great Society and the War on Poverty were principal factors in the rise of the fatherless rate for black children from about 24 percent in the mid-1960s to 73 percent today while the average fatherless rate for white children was 3 percent in the mid-1960s compared to 30 percent today.
Although the liberals' "work" has been so counterproductive for its purported beneficiaries, they have done exceedingly well for themselves in their greatly expanded and well-compensated employment, grant, contractual and other relationships with government, academia and communities. If only they could find an effective way for the government to serve as a father for an increasingly growing segment of society.
