Sorry, the word 'marriage' is taken

Maryland would like to change the definition of marriage. How can two things that are inherently different be defined by the same word?

When we say marriage, we know the parameters. It is the union of a man and woman. The consummation of the marriage is an important step. The fruit of their union has the potential to create another human being which makes union essential for the continuing existence of humanity.

This is vastly different from the union of same-sex couples. Their relationship does not involve a man and woman. It can not be consummated in the same way, and the fruit of the union can not produce a child.

It is impossible to use the same word to describe the two relationships. Relationships between same-sex individuals have traditionally been called friendships. Perhaps the court needs to coin a new word to describe friends who decide to commit to each other because the term "marriage" is already taken.
