Baltimore community activist will be missed

Jacques Kelly's obituary for Dennis Livingston (Sept. 21) was certainly fitting in as much as words can capture the essence of someone. Mr. Livingston was one of larger than life figures who remained on the battlefield to the end while fighting for jobs, justice, the environment and neighborhoods. Actually, his support of great populist causes was more extensive and profound than can be made clear in mere words.

He was a good brother in the struggle. Most recently, he stood with the residents of Greenmount West in questioning the use of a community school once promised to the neighborhood. Two years ago, I invited him and a few others to discuss green collar jobs we anticipated would be coming with the impending administration of Barack Obama. He spoke enthusiastically and knowledgeably to the hundreds of job seekers we assembled for the 7th annual Martin Luther King (Day of Service and Self Help) Job Fair.

He was bright, strong-willed and committed to the everyday person in need of justice from society. Suffice it to say, many will miss him on the battlefield for social change. He had a general's view but with his many talents and gifts, he stayed in the trenches.
