I remember growing up as a young woman in East Baltimore working with my neighbors and members of my church to try to stop the proliferation of liquor stores in our community ("Mayor renews vow to deny riot aid to certain liquor stores," June 15). It is utterly unbelievable that this struggle continues more than 50 years later. Now, it is Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake who is trying to curtail the spread of liquor stores in the city, and Gov. Larry Hogan is her major opponent. Liquor stores are not in the best interests of the citizens of disadvantaged areas of Baltimore City. If liquor stores add so much to a community, they should be relocated to Guilford, Homeland and Roland Park.
