The article, "New Israel defense chief backs 2-state solution" (May 31), describes comments made by Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that support negotiations over the Arab peace plan for a Palestinian state. In reality, Israel doesn't want a peace settlement with the Palestinians, today or ever.
All Israel wants is to continue stealing more Palestinian land and water in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem until nothing is left, while maintaining its strangulation blockade on the suffering civilian population in the Gaza Strip. In the summer of 2014, Israel invented an excuse to invade Gaza, killing 2,200 Palestinians, three quarters of whom were civilians, including over 500 children.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz correctly titled an analysis, "Netanyahu's lip service to Arab peace proposals is old news and no one's buying it" (May 31). The U.S. must end all financial, military, and diplomatic aid to apartheid Israel, become an honest broker for peace in the Middle East and support Palestinian statehood at the U.N. Only then will there ever be peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
