City schools should be promoting books, not trashing them

It is inconceivable to think that any administrator in the Baltimore City School system would authorize the trashing of books — especially when so many other options exist ("Teachers, councilmen criticize disposal of text books at closing school," June 16).

School officials should be promoting books, not purging them. They should be employing the services of trained librarians to encourage and inspire teenagers to read rather than tossing titles needed to expand the minds, hearts and horizons of young people.

How ironic that a school with the name of Heritage High should come to exemplify the loss of heritage — where education is undermined by the destruction of some of the world's most celebrated literature.
