Prevent suffering: Adopt a shelter pet

I am writing in response to the letter regarding the kitten that the writer attempted to save ("A sad end for a kitten, and a lesson for pet owners," Dec. 20). I strongly agree that pet owners should have their animals neutered or spayed. Not doing so is unfair to the animals that are living on the streets without homes. They have to suffer through every day without loving companions or proper care.

My sister and I have both volunteered at our local Humane Society. Whenever we go, we are astonished to see how many animals need homes. Some of them arrive in bad condition and can't even be nursed back to health, like the kitten in question. There are way too many animals like this that are in need of help.

Instead of letting their animals reproduce, people should adopt from the Humane Society. This will give pets a second chance at life instead of putting more animals alone out on the streets.
