About 500,000 Syrians have been killed in the last five years in their civil war, and over 10 million people have been displaced. The response of the United States and United Nations has been negligible and ineffective.
Israel builds homes, schools, clinics, parks, roads, office buildings, child care centers, concert halls and other improvements to previously unoccupied wasteland, and it is condemned by the United States and United Nations.
In the Middle East, the policies of Secretary of State John Kerry and President Barack Obama have been useless and unsuccessful, and now that they are the lamest of lame ducks, they make forward looking policy statements that are certain to be repudiated by the incoming administration, and which cannot possibly aid the situation ("John Kerry tears into Israel over settlements on his way out the door," Dec. 29). Why the last-minute cheap shots? Do they actually think they are helping anyone?
