Szeliga is the pro-Israel choice

Gov. Larry Hogan announces his endorsement for Kathy Szeliga for U.S. Senate. (Michael Dresser/Baltimore Sun video)

Rep. Chris Van Hollen has been masquerading as a pro-Israel legislator when in reality his actions speak far louder than his words ("Hogan endorses Szeliga in Annapolis as neither attends GOP convention," July 19).

Mr. Van Hollen has repeatedly sided against Israel. He voted for the Iranian nuclear agreement in the summer of 2015, a deal that has been overwhelmingly polled as being detrimental to Israel and to U.S. security and has been recently proven to have been sold by the Obama White House with faulty information and intelligence.

Additionally, the nuclear agreement has been deemed dangerous by highly respected defense and national security leaders around the world. More importantly, Mr. Van Hollen ignored the views and requests of his own constituents who voiced extreme concern and disapproval of the deal. Despite all the truth now known about the deal, Mr. Van Hollen still supports it and refuses to side with Israel.

It is clear that Mr. Van Hollen is a poor advocate for Israel and certainly not a candidate who represents the values of the Jewish community in Maryland.

Instead, it is time for strong leadership and a senator who will advocate a strong U.S.-Israeli relationship. That the choice is clear: Republican Del. Kathy Szeliga is a superior candidate. I strongly encourage those who support Israel to make the right selection this November and not allow another anti-Israel candidate to have a voice in the U.S. Congress. Instead, let's vote for a real supporter of Israel — Kathy Szeliga.
