Israel has run out of excuses

The article, "About-face on bus segregation" May 21), describes how Israel canceled its plan to ban Palestinians from riding on buses with Jewish settlers in the West Bank. The article also states that there are 350,000 settlers who live in the West Bank, but, in fact, there are now nearly 600,000 illegal settlers living in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. The Israeli peace group detailed how these settlements occupy 42 percent of private Palestinian land.

Israel continues to steal more Palestinian land, demolish their homes, engage in mass arrests including torture of children, allow daily settler violence against Palestinians and their property and maintain a strangulation blockade on the civilian population of Gaza. Last summer, Israel massacred 2,200 Palestinians in Gaza, three-quarters of whom were civilians including 500 children.

The U.S. should end its "special relationship" with apartheid Israel and end all financial, military and diplomatic aid to them. Finally, we should follow the lead of the Vatican by supporting Palestinian statehood at the United Nations.
