Cardin, Mikulski must support Iran nuclear deal

The Iran nuclear agreement is the best way to build toward long term peace. If Congress votes down this deal, the hardliners in Iran will win. The only way to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions as well as break decades of statement in the Middle East is through diplomatic engagement, a path that is now open as a result of this agreement between Iran, the United States and five other world powers. The alternative is an entrenched status quo that will continue the cycles of violence and increase violent extremism.

It is time for Maryland senators to come out in support of the Iran nuclear agreement. Sen. Ben Cardin, who is now the top Democrat in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a July 23 hearing, "I have not reached a conclusion." ("Cardin a key figure in debate over Iran nuclear deal," Aug. 1.)

It is now time for him and for Sen. Barbara Mikulski to reach a conclusion and come out in support of diplomacy. While this may not be a perfect deal (and there's no such thing as "perfect" in international negotiations), the alternative is no pretty picture. Diplomacy is the only way to find peace in the Middle East.
