Trump, immigration and echoes of Kristallnacht

During a campaign stop in Tampa, Donald Trump stood by his plan to build a border wall that he says Mexico will pay for. "It's going to be a big wall, it's going to be a real wall, it's going to be as beautiful as a wall can be..." Aug. 24, 2016. (C-SPAN)

Donald Trump's rant regarding his proposed immigration policies in front of his adoring followers was reminiscent of Adolf Hitler's rants at rallies at Nuremberg ("Mexico angry after 'ill-advised' Trump visit, immigration speech: 'The humiliation is now complete," Sept. 1).

The "deportation force" to be deployed the day after Mr. Trump's election would be reminiscent of Kristallnacht in November of 1938, which was the beginning of the round-up of Jews in Nazi Germany.

Executive Order 9066 of February 1942, which led to the round-up of American citizens of Japanese ancestry for incarceration, seems to be another forerunner of this proposed policy of rounding up immigrants who are here illegally.

Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
