I question assertion that Baltimore City residents are being taken advantage of by illegal immigrants. Speaking as a 25-year city resident, I have no problems with immigrants, legal or otherwise. In fact, I embrace them.
Nor am I the only one. The city is trying to attract working families, and most immigrant families are certainly that. During the recent municipal elections, illegal immigration was not even an issue.
Immigrant scapegoating might play well in Frederick or Carroll counties, but even those subdivisions have better things to worry about than the immigration status of people who are otherwise playing by the rules and contributing to society.
The New York Times recently reported that American citizens have been confined in local jails after federal immigration agents, acting on flawed information from the Department of Homeland Security, instructed the police to hold them for investigation and possible deportation.
If U.S. citizens are being detained even under an Obama administration program aimed at identifying illegal immigrants who commit crimes, how can Frederick County's dragnet be any more accurate?
