I applaud The Baltimore Sun for acknowledging the challenges that Maryland waterways have faced during this uniquely frigid winter ("Bay ice challenges commerce, navigation and fishing," Feb. 28). As such, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude and thanks for the U.S. Coast Guard's outstanding efforts at using their icebreakers to clear a path for ships to travel to and from the Port of Baltimore.
Without the Coast Guard working tirelessly this winter, our channels would not be safely navigable for port-bound cargo and cruise ships. I know how fortunate we all are at the Port of Baltimore to have Coast Guard Sector Baltimore as a key cog in helping the port's growth and success.
The Port of Baltimore supports more than 14,600 direct jobs and is one of Maryland's key economic generators. However, that title would not be possible without the work and time put in by the Coast Guard, especially during extreme and difficult weather periods throughout the year.
