Thank you for highlighting the work of the Baltimore Hunger Project and the Maryland Food Bank ("Helping the hungry," Nov. 22). Over this past Thanksgiving while looking forward to the many treats and delights of the coming holiday season, I, and many others, have the luxury of complaining about "watching our weight" and "avoiding holiday weight gain." Yet many others, including 1 in 8 Marylanders, are food-insecure, and don't get enough nutritious food to put on their holiday table or everyday table.
As The Sun's editorial mentions, protecting and strengthening the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as food stamps), is a critical safety net program to protect. I encourage Maryland's members of Congress including Sen. Ben Cardin, Senator-elect Chris Van Hollen and Rep. John Delaney to safeguard these effective, important programs against any proposed cuts.
