Not so easy for Howard Co. clubs to stay in the swim

You may not be correct in assuming that the swim clubs in Howard County could either raise their fees or increase their membership rolls in order to cover expenses ("Staying in the swim," July 5).

If I recall correctly, the Forrest Hills Swim and Tennis Club, for example, was limited to a fixed number of members by the county. That means that membership fees there would have to be raised.

With six clubs qualifying, the $8,666 credit each of them would receive is hardly going to break the county. Moreover, there are lots of other places the county could cut costs to assure that the pools are available for neighborhoods that are not in Columbia.
