Howard Co. schools are overrated [Letter]

Howard County schools are a joke ("Howard County's math failure," Oct. 13). I spent the last eight years there as a paraprofessional educator (after 30 years of printing) and the administrators have become unapproachable.

The last principal I worked for would cut me off in mid-sentence when I tried to make him aware of certain issues. His response was, "Yeah, we're working on it." He had no clue what I was even going to tell him. I was in math classes for years. You have 7th and 8th grade students who still don't know their multiplication facts and can't remotely grasp what's going on in the classroom. Every time I questioned anything, I got the same response: "Well, just do the best you can with the student." That's the standard answer.

I would read these outstanding reports on Howard County schools and just shake my head. Yes, there are a few schools in "the high rent district" that have well-mannered, attentive students who excel. Then you have schools like Harper's Choice Middle School with most on free lunch (that show up with a new pair of $150 shoes every month), no parenting, no life skills, etc. Do the best you can, really? I quit a couple months ago just due to the fact that the system sickened me.
