This year more than ever, Howard County voters have made themselves heard in terms of what they expect from local government. They want accountability, transparency and the opportunity to participate in those matters that mean the most — such as their children's education.
During this budget cycle, Howard County parents were forced to watch as certain elements of our public school system were threatened with cuts ("Howard County Council adopts $1.8 billion budget for fiscal year 2017,
"Ahead of Howard school budget adoption, financial audit, oversight committee proposed,".
Howard County should be a model for transparency and participatory government. We are blessed with a community that cares about our schools and wants to see them excel. My legislation is not an affront to the school system as much as it is an invitation to open the door. We need to do more to build trust with members of the community. They deserve it.
And we're not done. I will continue to fight for increased communication and collaboration among the school board, County Executive Allan Kittleman and County Council for all of our children, families and educators. With us all working together, we will be a model for inclusive government — and our kids will benefit most.
