Hopkins is committed to fair treatment of its security officers

We appreciate the respect and compassion that Johns Hopkins students recently expressed toward the members of our campus security team who are employed by the Allied Barton company ("JHU efforts to cut a union company raises doubts about its commitment to Baltimore," July 29). The safety of our students, faculty and staff is of paramount importance, and we are grateful to the men and women who work hard to protect our community.

Allied Barton's officers and personnel represent one aspect of our multi-layered security force. Our current review of the security contract — which Allied Barton has held for over 10 years — is focused entirely on the strong performance that is needed to keep our community safe. We are not seeking cuts in wages or health benefits, and we are committed to engaging contractors who are responsible and fair employers.

In addition, as a part of our HopkinsLocal and BLocal initiatives, we expect our contractors to demonstrate their commitment to hiring, developing and advancing employees from Baltimore, including from the city's most distressed neighborhoods.

We look forward to working with our students, faculty, staff and community as we continue to build upon the strong security program at Johns Hopkins.
