I am not a sports aficionado by any means, but I am called upon to comment on The Sun's lamentable lack of mention of local teams' accomplishments. Last Saturday night, the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team advanced to the next round of the NCAA Division III tournament this coming weekend in the Boston area. The preceding Friday night, they scored a season high of 95 points in order to advance to Saturday's game. The Sun reported on neither game — not even a box score.
We all too often read about the abuses of college basketball teams and/or their coaches; we hardly ever are treated to stories of scholar athletes who graduate on time with GPAs the envy of many, but that's the case at Hopkins. Perhaps it's time for the sports department to get the glint of the University of Maryland out of its eyes and the ups and downs of the Orioles and Ravens who aren't playing now anyway off the front pages of the news section. It's time that The Sun begin to pay attention to its local community and to tout the good in local college sports from time to time, not just when there isn't any more sensational news from the bad guys to talk about.
