Gov.-elect Larry Hogan must adopt a better vision for the future of transportation in Maryland ("Don't kill the 'Jobs Line,'" Jan. 5). Mr. Hogan might write off plans to build light rail lines in the name of balancing the budget but still plan to expand highways, notably Route 210, the Indian Head Highway. Before he wastes taxpayer money, he should glance at the statistics.
Annual vehicle miles have been dropping consistently for the last several years. America's driving boom is over. Most young people share my desire for expansive public transportation that is affordable and convenient.
We don't need more highways; we need more options. Mr. Hogan should drop expensive and unnecessary highway expansion projects like the plans for Indian Head Highway. He should look at the trends and then look to the future.
