Although I'm a lifelong Democrat, I have to say that a couple of the letters in the Dec. 30 edition pertaining to Gov.-elect Larry Hogan's being named Marylander of the Year by the Baltimore Sun were head scratchers to say the least.
One letter writer could not see that as a Republican Mr. Hogan's winning a gubernatorial election by overcoming a 2-1 Democratic advantage and little name recognition at the outset amounted to an accomplishment. He grudgingly acknowledged Mr. Hogan's victory because he spent enough money to win an election. Spent enough money? Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown outspent Mr. Hogan 5-1!
Another letter writer thought it was inconsistent for The Sun to endorse Mr. Brown but then after the election select Mr. Hogan as Marylander of the Year. It makes perfectly good sense to do just that. The editors could support one candidate as being the better choice for governor but at the same time marvel at how Mr. Hogan achieved his goal by defying the odds and endorsements. Perhaps they, too, saw this victory as an accomplishment.
