I was somewhat hopeful that Gov. Larry Hogan would prove to be a true moderate in the image of his father, but what I am seeing from day one is Scott Walker and the new Republican playbook ("How much did Democrats dislike Hogan's speech? A lot," Feb. 4).
First, he attacked all government workers — except the more Republican-leaning police and firefighters.
He will need those civil servants on his side when he begins to get pushback for rescinding long-deserved raises for other state workers.
Then the union-busting will be coming. You can smell it in the air as he sucks up to the fire and police officers by saying he doesn't want their pensions taxed.
We have police and firemen already able to retire after 20 or 25 years; some of these people are still in their 30s. But they should know he will be coming after them too after has divided the other public-sector unions.
Without the unions, and the benefits everyone reaps from having unionization, there will be a further decline in the middle class. The hot line to the Koch brothers probably has already been installed in Annapolis.
