Gov. Larry Hogan's announcement that he discovered a lump in his neck and will undergo cancer treatment coincided with my anniversary of surgery to remove a brain tumor ("Hogan announcement forces personal reflections in all of us," June 23). Wishing Mr. Hogan a speedy return to his optimal health status should rise above the usual partisan rancor in Annapolis — with extended heartfelt concern for Mrs. Hogan and family.
Governor Hogan deserves the time and privacy to seek the appropriate treatment for his medical condition. And the people of Maryland are entitled to have a serving governor act with diligence and full authority. This is why Mr. Hogan must resign from office effective immediately. The constitution of Maryland makes provisions for the lieutenant governor to become governor and for the selection of a new lieutenant governor.
Perhaps the new governor will ask Mr. Hogan to serve as lieutenant governor for the remainder of the term. Unless, of course, Boyd Rutherford chooses to seek election to the U.S. Senate in 2016 to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Barbara Mikulski and prevails.
