Thank you, Dan Rodricks, for your recent column regarding poor people living in Anne Arundel County housing. Reading the point of view of the e-mail correspondent who protests the presence of poor people and public housing, it occurs to me that:
1. As Mr. Rodricks points out, never overlook the accident of birth and the proverbial luck of the draw.
2. It is about the children, not about the need for a moralizing punishment of their parents. Policies should be in place to help make it possible for everyone to help their families and particularly to provide a society with educational, economic and social responsibility that will help the children independent of what their parents are able to accomplish. The social compact should just be there, period.
