Kudos to Janice Likens for her recent letter on Maryland's 1st District congressman and his views on Medicare ("Rep. Harris and Medicare," May 18). She rightly calls out Rep. Andy Harris for his support of the GOP proposal to dismantle the program. Of course, Medicare needs reforming. But the plan proposed by the Republicans is not workable and damaging.
The larger point I would make is that it's the responsibility of local Democratic members of Congress to call out Dr. Harris on this important issue, too. His district is a toss-up. Public pressure may help to either sway him to take a more moderate approach or suffer at the hands of voters in this fairly evenly divided district.
