Two Harford grocers deserve praise

Recently, Harford County Climate Action, a non-profit organization working to decrease the county's greenhouse gas output, conducted a survey of local grocery stores concerning their single-use plastic bag policies. We wish to congratulate two stores for being leaders in taking steps to reduce the use of disposable plastic bags.

The first store is Redner's, the only grocery store in the county that still offers an incentive (a 3-cents-a-bag rebate) to customers who bring their own bags. The second is Aldi, which does not provide free paper or plastic bags. This practice encourages customers to bring their own reusable bags.

Single-use plastic bags are an unnecessary use of petroleum at a time when we should be moving away from natural gas and oil-based products. Ninety-five percent of single-use bags are not recycled and end up polluting our land and oceans.

We heartily thank Redner's and Aldi for their commitment to a cleaner, healthier and prettier environment in Harford County.
