In "Israel's costly victory" (Aug. 8), Caroline Poplin writes that "to prevent resumption of the rockets, Israel is going to have to make concessions to Hamas." What Ms. Poplin doesn't see is that making concessions with evil never works. England tried that with Nazi Germany, giving up Czechoslovakia in exchange for peace. It didn't work. Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000, and that led to the second Intifada. When Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, it led to thousands of rockets being fired at them over the past nine years.
History shows that making concessions with evil only emboldens it.
