National Guard not framer's militia

Louis Brendan Curran's letter ("Time to 'well regulate' guns," May 27) is as condescending as it is ill informed. Mr. Curran believes that "state militias such as the Maryland National Guard" are the militias envisioned by the Second Amendment and that their "valid role" is "to be prepared to defend the state from a tyrannical federal…power."

How, I wonder, does Mr. Curran believe the Maryland National Guard would be able to defend Maryland from a tyrannical federal power when it has been part of the federal government's military establishment and subject, at any time, to active federal military service since The National Guard Mobilization Act of 1933?
