According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 31,104 children under the age of 18 were killed in firearm-related episodes between 1999 and 2014 in the United States. There's lots of heartbreak behind that number ("Advocacy group finds support for John Delaney, gun control in Maryland's 6th District," June 20).
I have close friends and neighbors who are responsible gun owners and believe nothing should be done to curtail their right to have firearms. I do believe that we have an obligation to our children to keep them safe from gun violence perpetrated by the mentally unstable.
Our elected officials should act swiftly to amend public safety laws to remove loopholes that allow people who obviously should not have guns to obtain them.
