Don't connect Army to Dallas shooting

In reference to the article, "Dallas gunman had Army training and Afghan stint" (July 9), the headline was misleading at best and, in my opinion, wrong. The only mention of the gunman's Army training was what his job was and that he served two tours in Iraq.

The article did mention that he joined the Huey P. Newton Gun Club but I'm sure that group has no connection to the U.S. military. As a retired 21-year Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq, I understand reporting that he was in the Army is part of the story but misleading your readers with that headline was not necessary.

My job in the military was in public affairs so I know the importance of telling the story and doing everything possible to get it right. I hope that you will work harder to do so in the future.
