Say no to gun violence

City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen's commentary on gun violence in Baltimore is another attempt to skirt the real issues ("America's public health crisis: gun violence," July 1).

In 2013 there were more guns (357 million) than people (317) in the U.S. Yet we are now going to use technology to locate the source of gunfire and enable police to arrive at the scene faster.

Meanwhile Congress again failed to pass a common sense law banning gun sales to people on the federal no-fly list and the list of suspected terrorists.

All of these attempts to control gun violence sidestep the real issue of effective gun control legislation that Congress has avoided for decades out of fear of the NRA.

One wouldn't think of allowing anyone to drive a car without proper training and licensing — automobiles are deadly in terms of the number of accidents and highway fatalities they're involved in each year. Why is effective gun legislation so different?

Election time is coming: Raise your voice and demand real, effective action to take guns off our streets.
