On Freddie Gray death, mayor can't hide behind Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has been obfuscating about the status of the police investigation into the arrest and death of Freddie Gray ("Gray dies a week after his arrest," April 20). She told CNN Monday morning that officers involved could not yet be questioned due to the Maryland police officers' bill of rights. Nonsense.

The law allows the officers involved to be questioned immediately if it's an emergency or at any reasonable time after the incident. The only delay is if after the interrogation starts an officer wants an attorney, then he may have up to 10 days to get one before questioning resumes.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake and the police department should tell us when the investigation started, who is the officer in charge of the investigation (the law says the Governor or the Attorney General can start the investigation), whether the officers involved been questioned yet, and if not, why not and when will they be questioned.
