As Baltimore declined, where were the Democrats?

Interesting column in The Sun by Dan Rodricks who believes that this is a perfect time for the new governor to bring about change in Baltimore ("Gov. Hogan has grand opportunity to help Baltimore," May 9).

Really! Since I rarely read Mr. Rodricks, he may have in the past offered his wisdom to the Democrats who have been in charge of Baltimore and the Maryland State House for as long as I can remember. In fact, in my lifetime there has never been a Republican mayor of Baltimore. Why haven't these same opportunities existed for the current and previous mayors?

The curious part of this piece is that it is directed at Republican Gov. Larry Hogan. In addition to ruining Baltimore forever, the Democrats have been in charge of the legislature for the last 50-plus years. This is the third Republican governor in that period of time. And, of course, we know how eager the Senate and House rulers are to cooperate with the governor, don't we? Why haven't these same opportunities existed for previous Democratic governors?

My view of Mr. Rodricks' column is that it is a set-up piece so in the future this same writer can say, "See, I told you so." Well, good luck to anyone, even fans of the writer, believing that. The mess that exists in Baltimore is beginning to be exposed as either world class incompetence or world class corruption. I hope the media follows through on the following the money.

William M. Libercci Sr., Nottingham
