Why were Baltimore police escorting NFL commissioner in the first place?

It pained me to hear that two Baltimore police officers were injured in the line of duty Sunday ("Two Baltimore officers hurt in motorcycle accident on way to escort NFL commissioner," Sept 12). Their job is to protect us, and each one of us should be thankful to them and relived that their injuries are not life threatening.

My concern is why they were doing what they were doing, providing an escort from a chartered jet flight to a Ravens game? The commissioner of the National Football League is an important man, extremely wealthy, and undoubtedly very busy, but he is a man that oversees another group of men who play a game for entertainment. Did the NFL have concerns about his safety, on a high profile game on Sept. 11, or did he not want to be bothered by traffic on the way to the game?

I would much rather have seen those policemen among the honored first responders inside the stadium than making sure one VIP gets there on time.
