What does race have to do with being lieutenant governor?

Why does someone running for office feel the need to claim that if elected they would be "the first African-American female lieutenant governor?" ("Gansler names Ivey as running mate," Oct. 14).

What difference does it make what color, race, creed or culture a person running for election is? They need to tell us how they are going to help the people of Maryland and quit using such qualifications to sway the voting public.

Let them tell the public their plan if elected and stop harping on their culture, race, creed or color. Those things don't matter if they can do the job as promised.
