It is time to talk about race and inequality

It's time we talked seriously about race and economic inequality.

Freddie Gray's death in police custody sparked rioting and a citywide curfew ("Six officers charged in death of Freddie Gray." May 1).

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association, I condemn the actions of both the police and the rioters.

The Prophet Muhammad stated that "a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white except by piety and good action."

Equality must be the basis for our nation as it was the guiding principle of its founders. Outcries such as rioting and killing are uncalled for. We should remain peaceful and obey the authority.

As is stated in the Holy Quran, "O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger and those of you who are in authority."

We have come so far and yet there are still these types of actions taking place. It is time for us to come together as a nation and have a peaceful dialogue to address the racial tensions and socioeconomic disparities that lie behind the unrest in Baltimore.
