Howard County's school board has acted foolishly

What a splendid example of fiscal responsibility Howard County Board of Education set with their handling of the Renee Foose situation ("Howard County board pledged to pay Foose $1.65 million package to step down as school superintendent," May 4). Can public education really afford a settlement in which Ms. Foose receives twice as much to quit now as she would to complete the three years on her contract? Plus, of course, they will pay her original cost again for a replacement. What a bargain.

If this were a private corporation, we might just shake our heads in disbelief at the waste, but this is a public school system. That is $1.6 million-plus in taxpayer dollars spent for no return. And this waste is from people in charge of educating our youth. Far from disseminating knowledge, these "educators" provide a prime example of irresponsibility, if not downright stupidity.
